The Westacres Craft Show returns to West Bloomfield Township on Saturday, Nov. 7, featuring handcrafted goods from independent artists and makers.

The show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 3700 Westacres Drive, according to the show’s website. Featured crafts include jewelry, pottery, painting, photography, glass and fiber work.

Craft Show Chair Katie Kwak previewed this year’s event in an interview on Civic Center TV, discussing its continued support for local artists and craft makers with Jake Schaf.

Westacres has hosted craft events since 1968, when the neighborhood launched its Artist Market. The Westacres Women’s Club started the Craft Fair in 1974 in response to growing interest in handmade crafts, according to the show’s about page.

The neighborhood itself dates to 1936, when U.S. Sen. James Couzens of Michigan contributed $550,000 of his own money alongside $300,000 in federal funding to establish 150 homes for low-income automotive factory workers, according to the Greater West Bloomfield Historical Society.

Each home included an acre of land, with residents encouraged to grow food for self-sufficiency. Oakland Housing Inc. also supported communal activities and supplemental enterprises, the historical society says.
